Elders

Shirley Freriks

Born in 1940, Shirley was raised in the Ohio/Michigan area of the US and graduated from University of Michigan in 1962. She moved to San Francisco in 1962 and began a career in retailing including with the The Gap helping to power that business to its success. After briefly retiring from The Gap, she reentered a second career with Williams-Sonoma until her official ‘retirement’ in 1982.

After 15 years of travel and personal study in Tai Qi Xuan, Gi Gong and energy work, Shirley longed for a quieter, more contemplative life which inspired her to purchase an isolated, but degraded and logged 20 acre piece of land in Albion, Mendocino.  She spent the next 20 years living a sustainable life, tending, caring for and ‘reinspiring’ the land and redwood forest, restoring a farmhouse, building a meditation studio, creating gardens and living by her wits.

Desiring to pursue meaningful engagement with the issues she cared about and to reconnect with others more, she sold the Homestead and bought a home in Grass Valley, Ca. where she started the WasteNOT group which focuses on recycling education and plastics reduction as well as the Elders in Action group.  Elders Action Network is her major focus now whose focus is to build a movement to give elders a voice and purpose. She has also been actively involved with Nevada County Climate Action Now group.

In Shirley’s words, “there is a BIG difference between being an ELDER and being elderly. I represent the vital engaged elder who is involved with life now and fortunate to have the perspective of one who has been alive for a pretty long time. We are a new breed of ancestors involved in the 21st century and working on the solutions demanded today”.

From his early experiences at the height of the Haight(Ashbury) days and time spent with Sai Baba in India, through his career in the healing arts as a Healing Tao teacher and the owner/director of a holistic health center in Pacific Beach, to his current life tending the gardens of the Madre Grande Monastery, he considers his life blessed.

Madre Garden is an eco-environment that sits on a 264 acre property in a remote valley southeast of San Diego. The land contains the remnants of a 9000 year old village used for fertility and feminine empowerment for centuries making it a feminine energy vortex and is open to the public by appointment. Utilizing his 50 year gardening experience, he has planted a mini conifer forest, eucalyptus grove, vegetable gardens, orchard as well as many flowering trees and shrubs, citrus, guavas, pomegranates and mulberries attracting many butterflies, bees and birds to Madre gardens.
