What Motivates Us To Change?

According to Arlene Harder in her book, Ask Yourself Questions and Change Your Life, (1)

there are three forces that generally motivate change.

Push

Pull

 Pain

     The Push Force

             The Push Force

Whenever we nag, coerce or demand another to change, we are utilizing the push force. Domestic violence, as well as violence committed in our streets, are examples of an escalated push force. On a larger scale, the push force is seen in acts of war between countries.

While the perpetrator of push force may experience a temporary sense of power, control and ability to effect change in others, it comes at a cost. Resistance, feelings of powerlessness, resentment, and anger in the receiver (victim) ultimately creates division and separation.

Personally and collectively.

Most of us seek to find ways to relieve the suffering we experience as a result of psychological/physical pain. ie. serious illness or divorce.

Similarly, when we observe/experience the effects of environmental degradation, catastrophe, and poverty, it  can motivate collective change.

 Pain can bring awareness to ways we may have been off course and motivate the corrective action needed to improve our lives.

“If I only had six months to live, what would I most want to do for myself, my family and friends and the world?”

Death can pull us to clarify, inform and motivate us to place what matters most front and center in our lives.

Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.” Steve Jobs
