Nevada City

Nevada City is the county seat for Nevada County. Other Nevada County towns include Grass Valley and Truckee and unincorporated areas include Rough and Ready, Penn Valley, Washington, North San Juan, Peardale and Alta Sierra. The Nisenan Native American tribe made their homes in the foothills of Nevada County for thousands of years prior to The Gold Rush era, at which time Nevada County was birthed into its current form in 1851.

There are a few things we have come to be known for since that time. Nevada County was home to the first long-distance telephone in the world, built in 1877.  The Pelton wheel was invented here in the 1870’s which was designed to power our gold mines. They continue to drive hydro-electric generators today. Our county has also sometimes been referred to as the “Silicon Valley of the Sierras” as it is home to more than fifty high tech and applied tech companies.

We have a bit of a rebellious streak in our history as Rough and Ready was the only mining town to have “seceded” from the Union and then voted itself back in. Apparently, the citizens didn’t agree with new taxes and the prohibition of alcohol, and also weren’t too keen on the Postal Service’s demand that they choose between either “Rough” or “Ready”. The rebels won out.

A CSA is an arrangement between individual farms and community members. It is a direct way to support your local farmers. In return, you receive fresh, healthy, seasonal food and the satisfaction of knowing you are truly making a difference! CSA members invest in the farm at the beginning of the season, when funds are most needed, by purchasing a subscription. Then throughout the season, they receive a weekly box of produce or other goods. The farms vary in what they provide — produce, fruit, meat, and even flowers. For a list of Nevada County CSAs.
