Technologyn. the use of science in industry, engineering, etc., to invent useful things or to solve problems

Our technological advances are expanding each and every year. Sometimes has been cause for both celebration and concern at times.

In general, it has freed our lives of time consuming and tedious work providing us with more leisure time to enjoy life. It has also helped to expand our worldview in many cases.

On the other hand, technology has the capacity to destroy, to upset the delicate balance of our ecosystems and drastically reduce our quality of life.  For example, utilizing Genetically Modified Organisms in our food source without fully understanding the implications of their usage could prove harmful to us. The same could be said for nuclear energy production.  Through our decisions, we are leaving a legacy that future generations will be burdened with.

The following page is devoted to companies that look at the deeper implications of their technological advance weighing the overall benefits to the risks involved. They are on the forefront of changing the paradigm to that of care.

But first, a little history.

The Third Industrial Revolution

It is said that we are in the Third Industrial Revolution.

The first industrial revolution, 1780-1850, gave us the steam engine and the beginnings of automation.

The second, 1870-1930, gave us the assembly line, oil and electricity and the internal combustion engine.

The third started in 1980s and has centered on computers, the digital revolution and has taken us more into the information and service realm.

This third revolution is about to make an even more significant shift.

Jeremy Rifkin describes how the five pillars of the Third Industrial Revolution will create thousands of businesses and millions of jobs, and usher in a fundamental reordering of human relationships, from hierarchical to lateral power, that will impact the way we conduct business, govern society, educate our children, and engage in civic life.

Disruptive innovation

This is a term used to describe  an innovation that helps create a new market displacing an earlier technology. It may improve a product or service in ways that the market does not expect, designing for a different set of consumers in a new market and eventually lowering prices in the existing market. (1)

Examples of this can be seen in many sectors:  Postal Mail….email. Telegraph….telephone. Typewriter.…word processor….personal computer. 8 track…cassette…CD….downloadable digital media. Chemical photography..…digital photography. Encyclopedia.…Wikepedia. Horse and buggy.…steamboat….train….automobile…airplane…..Supersonic jet……rocket. X-ray….ultrasound…MRI.

Every sector has seen an evolution.

In most cases, we have experienced more efficiency, versatility and convenience improving our lives in many ways.

The Negative Effects of Technology

Each innovation’s benefits needs to be weighed against it’s environmental, social and cultural effects.

The consequences for our environment and health and well being have been impacted by some of the technological “advances” that have occured. Examples include the advent of  herbicides, pesticides, GMOs, certain plastics, chemically laden cleaning products, fossil fueled transportation, weapons of mass destruction, nuclear energy and their byproducts.

While the motivation to create these new technologies might have been to improve our lives in one way or another. There was often not enough attention given to the long term consequences of their use before their wholesale adoption into our everyday lives.

Replacement Technologies

Replacement Technologies

In order to clean and restore the imbalances that some of our technologies have created on the planet, replacement technologies are being considered.

Shifting our focus to industries oriented to cleaning and restoring balance to our planet and further, technologies that create benefits for the planet or at the very least ‘do no harm’ will  create a true paradigm shift for the world.

Alternatives are now becoming available as replacements for our harmful industries so we can begin to make healthier choices both personally and collectively.

The Venus Project-Future By Design

“The Venus Project presents a bold, new direction for humanity that entails nothing less than the total redesign of our culture. There are many people today who are concerned with the serious problems that face our modern society: unemployment, violent crime, replacement of humans by technology, over-population and a decline in the Earth’s ecosystems. As you will see, The Venus Project is dedicated to confronting all of these problems by actively engaging in the research, development, and application of workable solutions. Through the use of innovative approaches to social awareness, educational incentives, and the consistent application of the best that science and technology can offer directly to the social system, The Venus Project offers a comprehensive plan for social reclamation in which human beings, technology, and nature will be able to coexist in a long-term, sustainable state of dynamic equilibrium.”

Electronic Paper

E-paper is a portable, reusable storage and display medium that looks like paper but can be repeatedly written on (refreshed) – by electronic means – thousands or millions of times. E-paper will be used for applications such as e-books, electronic newspapers, portable signs, and foldable, rollable displays. Information to be displayed is downloaded through a connection to a computer or a cell phone, or created with mechanical tools such as an electronic “pencil”. (1)  55 Million newspapers are sold each week day. What if we could use the same piece of paper?

The Internet of Things: Cisco

The Internet of Things is the network of physical objects accessed through the Internet, as defined by technology analysts and visionaries. These objects contain embedded technology to interact with internal states or the external environment. In other words, when objects can sense and communicate, it changes how and where decisions are made, and who makes them. Watch the short video on ‘Imagine the Possibilities‘

Industrial internet consortium

A consortium of industrial giants, including AT&T, Cisco, General Electric, IBM and Intel will cooperate to create engineering standards to connect objects, sensors and large computing systems in some of the world’s largest industrial assets, like oil refineries, factories or harbors. “I don’t think anything this big has been tried before” in terms of sweeping industrial cooperation, said  William Ruh, vice president of G.E.’s global software center. “This is how we will make machines, people and data work together.”
