Why Taking Responsibility is Important for Us.

Responsibility can be defined as our ability to respond to situations.

When we are empowered to create changes in our lives, it not only benefits us, but it benefits our families, communities and nations.

In order to respond to our lives in empowered ways, we need self awareness tools and tools for creating self suffiency in our lives.

This not only is a compassionate thing for communities to offer, it is wise. A well educated and empowered populace, one fully capable of participating in effecting change in their lives can create healthier, happier more vibrant communities, nations and world.

Changing the Locus of Control

When we blame our families, communities and nations for the outcomes in our lives, it takes the locus of control away from us and contributes to our feelings of hopelessness and powerlessness to effect change.  In response, we may withdraw from our lives, allow others to take care of us or lash out at our families, co-workers, communities and society at large, all in an effort to cope with our feelings of despair.

Powerlessness doesn’t feel good.

If the cycle of disempowerment continues unaddressed, it can lead to debilitating depression and generalized anxiety making it even more challenging to take effective action in our lives.

Taking responsibility for our lives, in part, means reestablishing the locus of control within.

It says, I am responsibile for how I am responding to my life now regardless of my past.

And, this is good news.

Because we are empowered to make different choices for ourselves now.

Responsibility has gotten a bad rap in many ways.

However, taking responsibility for ourselves is actually one of the keys to our well being

Doing for others who avoid taking responsibility for themselves often reinforces their sense of powerlessness. Helping others to help themselves helps to empower them.

Although compassionate support is often what is most needed and appropriate to assist someone facing a difficult life circumstance, teaching tools and skills that develop self reliance are equally important if those skills are lacking.

Responding to our Circumstances

How do you respond when outer circumstances are out of alignment with what you value most?

What do you do when you first notice the uncomfortable stirrings inside?

 Do you blame the world?

Do you debate others over trying to bring them to your side?

Do you withdraw, numb out, get angry, lash out?

Or, do you let your painful feelings inspire you to action to change your circumstance?

Overwhelm and Shut Down

Do you become overwhelmed by the enormity of challenges you face personally or on a planetary level?

Perhaps you feel you are not up to the task on a personal level or believe one person cannot effect change on a planetary level, so why try?

Becoming aware of what underlies our lack of response, inaction, complacency or acting out in an important first step when we are stuck in overwhelm and shut down.

Only then can we address the cause.

Correcting our course here on Earth will take our individual responses which form our collective response.

Whether it is stopping a particular industry because of the harm being done to the planet or by supporting the industries that provide for the health and well being of humanity and planet Earth, we need empowered, motivated individuals willing to respond to the pressing needs of our planet.

Being accountabile for our actions helps build bridges.

Trust and respect are nourished.

We build our responsibility muscle when we own up to our mistakes. If we are fully expressing and engaged in this world, mistakes are inevitable. Taking responsibility and ownership for our mistakes is worthwhile for many reasons.

The benefits for both personal and global relationships are discussed here.

If a nation took full responsibility for its errors by holding itself fully accountable for it

including corrective action where needed,

would you respect and trust that nation more?

What do you think might happen with our international relationships as a result?

Those whom we choose to surround ourselves with have the greatest influence on us.

If taking responsibility in our life has been challenging for us, this may be an important consideration.

Do the people who surround you inspire you, uplift you, hold you accountable, help you grow?

Are they active participants in life?

How do they respond to you and how are they are responding to the world?

The world needs fully empowered people who are willing to respond to

the pressing issues that

humanity and the planet face now.

Becoming the empowered being you were meant to be,

allows you to respond to the world in ways that have far reaching benefits for all concerned.

And that is the beauty of Taking Responsibility.
