 Creating Unity Between Religions.

 Creating Unity Between Religions.

Emphasizing our religious differences has created separation and conflict throughout history. At times, this has led to war. Currently, there are at least 19 hotspots of religious-based conflict in the world – some new, some very old.  Examples of long standing religious conflicts would include the European wars following the Protestant Reformation in Europe (1524 to 1648), the Arab Israeli conflict (Islam/Jewish) and the conflict in Northern Ireland between the Protestants and Roman Catholics.

.

The constitutions of some countries contain provisions expressly forbidding the state from engaging in certain acts of religious intolerance or preference within its own borders ie. the USA, Germany, Ireland, Estonia, Turkey, China and the Phillipines.

How do you think we are doing in that regard?

“The unity of religions is based on direct perception of ultimate reality. The paths are different but the goal remains the same. Even if the whole world becomes convened to one religion or another, it will not enhance the cause of unity. Unity in diversity is the plan of the universe.”

Turkey an Example of Religious Tolerance for 500 years

Religious tolerance is also a part of modern Turkey’s founder, Mustafa Kemal’s government’s policy.  In Kuzguncuk, an ancient part of Istanbul, Turkey,  Muslims, Jews, and Christians co exist and in some cases share worship. Here you will find a church, a mosque, and a synagogue, right beside each other. “There is no difference between us. There is only one God and different paths to that God.”, says priest Mehmet Biraz. His key opens the door to all three worlds.

The Mystical Core of Great Traditions

“Six great religions have shaped the major civilizations that exist today: the three Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) and the three Eastern religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism/Confucianism). If we compare the testimonies of these mystics about the Nature of this Reality, we find that, despite vast separations in time, place, language, and culture, they are strikingly similar—so much so that many scholars have come to view their teachings as constituting a single perennial philosophy which, like some irrepressible flower, keeps blooming again and again in the human psyche.

Bahais Seek Broward Unity

The Pembroke Pines congregation of the Bahai Faith is working to distribute a seven-page call for religious unity to congregations of all faiths in Broward County. “Our international body has sent us the letter and asked us to present it to all religious leaders. We want to present it to every priest, pastor, rabbi, Buddhist and Sikh leader.” The document calls on religious groups to move beyond appealing for religious tolerance and accept the reality that they are equal in validity. The organization’s statement goes on to challenge religions to renounce the notion of exclusive access to truth, which, it says, has caused much violence and hatred.
