I’ve worked for over fifty years with and for folks who, for a variety of reasons, have no home. Each of them has been through some kind of physical, mental, or emotional trauma and could not support their self.
Today I work as a Peer Support Specialist with severely mentally ill and/or substance use participants. I also serve dinner monthly at our local shelter in Grass Valley, CA, Hospitality House. Many of these friends have difficulty finding, let alone keeping, a home without regular support. A little support by listening and not judging goes a long way in recovery.
I’d like to see classes in Elementary through High schools throughout the country that teach life skills, financial planning, cultural diversity and inclusion, and how everyone needs to care about fragile folks who need support.
My answer du jour to homelessness is loving, caring one-on-one lasting advocacy. Let’s support one person, and the facilities that put a roof over their heads, e.g. shelters, Respite centers,Hospital Crisis Care units, Transition housing, Psychiatric Hospital facilities, and Master Lease apartment rentals for low income folks. Get trained and volunteer if you really want to end homelessness.

Thank you for your thoughtful response. You share many useful suggestions here. I particularly appreciate your preventative solutions geared toward our educational system. It is far easier and less costly (financially and on the human suffering side of things) to demonstrate and teach compassion and the life skills necessary to navigate today’s world effectively.
